The Moon is Down :: essays research papers
Throughout known history the system of democracy seems to be the most just, the most logical and the fairest of all ruling systems. Its ability to adjust to changing times is only one reason for its perseverance. In John Steinbeckââ¬â¢s The Moon is Down, this durability is displayed through the townspeople led by Mayor Orden, under the oppressive heels of their conquerors. à à à à à One of the most obvious examples of democracyââ¬â¢s endurance is the resistance displayed by the townspeople against their invaders. The oppression and invasion of the conquerors arouse, instead of crush, the desire in the defeated for freedom. These people, who have lived with the idea of a free rule of democracy, refuse to be chained down under the oppressive rule of the conquerors. It is for this reason that they strike back at their invaders. As said by Mayor Orden to Colonel Lanser of the aggressors, ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËThe people donââ¬â¢t like to be conquered, sir, and so they will not be. Free men cannot start a war, but once it is started, they can fight on in defeat. Herd men, followers of a leader, cannot do that, and so it is always the herd men who win battles and the free men who win wars.ââ¬â¢ â⬠[pp. 185-186] Thus, it is because of their freedom that people believing in the free rule of democracy do not let down and die when conquered, do not accept their being robbed of their rights, and fight against what is unjustly done to them. à à à à à The townspeople fight on again, perhaps with even more resolve, after the execution of Alex Morden, instead of their spirits being crushed, as was the intent. The entire purpose of Alex Mordenââ¬â¢s public execution was to dissuade potential upstarts, but the result was the exact opposite of what was desired. The public display only empowered the townspeopleââ¬â¢s resolve to fight back. To put it in Mayor Ordenââ¬â¢s words, ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËOur people are invaded, but I donââ¬â¢t think theyââ¬â¢re conquered.ââ¬â¢ â⬠[p 139] Consequently, these people refuse to be put down, and, when faced with situations like Alexââ¬â¢s death, are not deterred but continue on with strengthened resolve. à à à à à While resistance is one aspect of democracyââ¬â¢s endurance, determination is another powerful ability it has, as it is shown in the Anders boysââ¬â¢ escape to Britain for help. Because of their overwhelming desire for freedom, the townspeople were willing to, and did, try anything possible to rebel against their invaders.

Racial Diversity Worksheet
According to Wikipedia Encyclopedia African Americans have experienced significant changes in their economic, social and political standings since the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans have more access to getting a higher education, a better paying job, and they are more involved in the American political process than any other minority group in the United States. Even though you still see many African Americans living in poverty, struggling to survive, and having limited access to healthcare, you also see many African Americans working extremely hard to accomplish many great things. Many of them have great jobs, own their own homes, and are living a wonderful life all together. For example, Barrack Obama beat all the odds and became the first African American President of the United States. Barrack Obama survived being and ââ¬Å"averageâ⬠American to complete school, go to college, raise a family, and eventually becoming the President. He is changing the way the ââ¬Å"a verageâ⬠African American and Americans in general are viewed and what their potential standings in economic, social, and political America will be.à I know that President Obama is having a lot of issues rightà now and not looking like a good role model, but at one point he was someone that African Americans and all Americans did look up to.1. There are two definitions for racism. The first definition of racism is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. The second definition of racism is discrimination or prejudice based on race. There are many ways that racism affects diversity. Racism keeps people away from people of different races and with that happening they are not learning about all the different ethnic backgrounds.2.à According to the National Journal the interactions of racial groups has become more positive than negative or neutral. Many people do not see their friends and neig hbors as different races even though they are. Today many people are open to diversity. They are willing to learn more about the different cultural backgrounds, because of the potential day to day interaction with friends, family, and neighbors.3. Even though we the people believe that we are all equal there is still existing social inequities based on race. African Americans and Latinos are more likely to live in high- poverty communities than poor white people.à This means that African Americans and Latino are at high risk of not being to have quality schools, housing, healthcare, affordable consumer credit, or anything else that will help them to get out of poverty.4. I believe that the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today's society is people are afraid to give a person of another racial group a chance to prove who the really are. Many people live in the past and are brought up to believe that their racial group is superior over any other racial group. Many of these people are stuck in their own ways and are not open to any change.
